going to the dogs

duke 003.jpglast friday's game celebrated man's best friend: dogs! dog day (or night) at the coliseum featured costume contests, lots of drool, and a howl of a good time. and with all those tails a'wagging and paws pumped high to the sky, the a's pulled out a great win versus the white sox.

speaking of the contests, there was a dog dressed up in his owner's son's (former) little league uniform. with that tail hole, i doubt the kid will ever wear it again. the dog, on the other hand, really seemed to enjoy his bball attire and shades. gibson, the world's tallest dog, also made an appearance. i'm a huge fan of great danes;  i had two at different times growing up, and really, no dog is more dog than a great dane (although my friends referred to lulu, our "mini" great dane, as my pony. neigh!).

poodle.jpgafter scouring sur la table, i came away with a handful of adorable dog cookie cutters, and made tons of dog-themed sugar cookies wearing a's t-shirts and stuff. some had chocolate sprinkled "hair", and i covered the poodle cookies in white fondant icing and colorless sugar crystals.

a note on the recipe: i used a mixture of all-purpose flour and whole wheat pastry flour, which worked just fine. i also realized that, after my first batch of pooches browned quickly right around the 10 min. mark, you should keep your doggie dough on the thicker side. the tails, especially, will brown earlier than the rest of the dough, so if you get a dark bum, it's time to take these pups out of the oven.

schnauzer cookie.jpgfriday evening, i flagged down santiago casilla around the 4th with my dorky half-grin, saying "hey, santiago! i made you some cookies!" his eyes lit up (although that could have been glare from the stadium lights...), and he said, "hey! thanks!" before grabbing the box of "can i get a woof-woof?" cookies and getting comfy with them and his pitching buddies in the bullpen.

we sat 7 rows behind the bullpen that night, and cheered for our team as we came back from behind. but the reliance on homers really worries me. what happened to our small ball and base running skillz? are we now relying solely on the chance of a home run and nothing else? and will the a's turn it around this year or are we stuck in a funk for the next month or so? 'cuz i don't bake james brownies.
